Packaging: Interview with Marc Collis – Packaging Manager
Marc Collis, Packaging Manager for Riekes Material Handling has over 2 decades of packaging experience; below he shares some thoughts with us on the importance of packaging.
Interview:
What is your background in the Packaging Industry? I started in the packaging industry in 1988. Seems like yesterday!
How long have you been at Riekes Material Handling and what is your role? I've been with Riekes since the inception of the packaging division in 2001. I manage the packaging division for Riekes, which currently consists of 7 salespersons plus excellent support from inside sales and technical service. I also have a customer base and enjoy working with them.
What are the new trends in packaging? More than ever before, we see companies looking for labor-saving methods, machinery, and materials. Most have already cut out the obvious "fat" from their operations, and now are looking for ways to streamline without compromising the integrity of their packaging.
"Green" is becoming a hot topic. How can your division make a company more "green"? More and more ecologically responsible products are popping up, and they are quickly becoming cost-feasible. Most newer and more efficient equipment also contributes to source reduction. A successful green initiative usually consists of many small changes, such as machinery that pauses if not being used or films that are pre-set to begin degrading in a couple of years.
What is a free customer audit and what does it include? Working with companies to increase productivity and reduce costs is the fun part of the job. We routinely tour facilities to look for ways that we can help, and we often do this with our other divisions so that we can cover more ground and save customer's time. Our company has an incredible amount of talent and experience and it is rewarding to utilize that to solve problems.
How is it that Riekes Packaging retains existing customers and attracts new ones? I think most Riekes Packaging customers would say that our customer service sets us apart from our competition. We are not the largest supplier and we find that we can be more responsive and more innovative while focusing on the customer's needs. Our people are very conscientious about helping others and many times we are able to ship items immediately or offers custom stocking terms that some other packaging suppliers would not consider.
How does the packaging division operate with the other divisions at Riekes Material Handling? We offer our customers a very unique service, since within our company we can seamlessly integrate packaging equipment into material handling systems including various types of conveyor lines, weighing systems, lifting devices, etc. We can take a client's concept and carry that through development, proposal, and installation phases- all within our offices.
What do you like most about working at Riekes Material Handling? Whether it is a simple material change or a complex turnkey system, it is extremely rewarding to solve a customer's packaging challenge. It is also really fun to work with such adept employees that really care about customer service.

Scales: ED - Crane Scales / Dynamometers
An important safety practice to follow is to stay within the load limits of your lifting equipment. Guess work is not an acceptable option. A good way of knowing and staying clear of load limits is the use of crane scales (or dynamometers). The use of Crane Scales allows you to gather weigh data and stay safe at the same time. As they say, "Better safe than sorry."
Dillon's ED Series Crane Scales give you the strength and accuracy to ensure you are safe within your limits. Dillon has two ED series to choose from:
EDxtreme (EDx)
